Ask Asa: Does the Wine Diet Work?
Jul 24, 2015
(WJCL) - A new diet trend is taking Happy Hour by storm. It's called the Wine Diet, but does it work?
A study by Oregon State University says a glass or two of wine many be just the thing to get your metabolism running. It suggests that red wine grapes, raw, in juice or wine, can help people with health problems related to obesity such as fatty liver.
There are still several questions surrounding the research not the least of which is does the alcohol in the wine negate the benefits.
Tim Rutherford from Savannah Wine Cellar says, "You're also looking at caloric intake. Any weight loss program is about burning more calories than you take on."
The average glass of wine has 100 to 150 calories. You have to walk more than a mile to burn those off.
Rutherford says, "Will a couple wines help you lose? Probably not if you had a New York Strip and cheese cake for dinner. Compound in those wines and it will not help you lose."
The study is ongoing with a future eye on alcohol vs wine benefits. Probably the best advice for now"
Rutherford says, "Drink what you enjoy and if you want to lose weight go to the gym."

Isn't the idea of a wine diet that you drink a bottle with every course? You still put on weight – but you don't care.
