B.R. Cohn sold to Vintage Wine Estates
Jul 22, 2015
(PD) - A parade of acquisitions continued in Wine Country on Wednesday when B.R. Cohn Winery, the Sonoma Valley winery that hosts a popular summer concert series, announced that it has been purchased by Vintage Wine Estates.
“Like a number of folks in the Valley who have sold in recent years, it looks like we are at the end of the era of family-owned wineries. It is becoming increasingly difficult to compete and grow family-run businesses in this new environment where bigger entities with more resources are taking over,” founder Bruce Cohn said in a statement.
Financial terms were not disclosed. Cohn and his wife, Laurie, will continue to live on the Trestle Glen property adjacent to the winery’s Olive Hill Vineyards, which he bought in 1974.
“This is a proud moment for our family, and our hard work has paid off.” Cohn said.
Cohn intends to focus his energy on managing The Doobie Brothers, a band that he has represented for more than four decades, and producing his annual B.R. Cohn Charity Events Sonoma Music Festival. The concert, which will be held Oct. 2-4, is moving to Sonoma this year and will feature Chicago, Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band, the Doobie Brothers, Gregg Allman and others. Since its inception 29 years ago, the festival has raised more than $6 million dollars for various charities, according to the winery.
Based in Santa Rosa, Vintage Wine Estates now owns 10 wine companies in Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino counties, including Close Pegase, Girard, Viansa, Windsor Vineyards, Wine Sisterhood, Cosentino, Cartlidge & Browne, Sonoma Coast Vineyards and Ray’s Station.
“Vintage Wine Estates is a family-owned wine company and stewardship is a core value,” Vintage Wine Estates President Pat Roney said in a statement. “As we build our collection of iconic wineries, vineyards and brands, our goal is to enhance what makes each one unique and offer resources and investment for the future. We are extremely pleased to add this landmark estate to our collection.”
