Growth in Missouri’s wine industry helps fuel local economy

(KY3) - What started out as a small family business and hobby for Brian Overboe, has grown into a successful winery and tourist attraction.

"I have been open for 10 years professionally. I started out the first year only making 350 gallons [of wine]. I now have the capability to make more than 3,000 gallons per year," said Overboe.

Overboe owns and operates OOVVDA Winery just outside of Springfield. Since opening nearly a decade ago he's not only noticed growth in his own business, but also in the industry.

"I think I was number 46 [registered winery] in the state, and we are now up over 125," Overboe explained.

A new study by the Missouri Wine and Grape Board finds the state's wine industry has grown by 150% since 2005.

"We don't consider each other competition, we are trying to grow the culture in the state and grow the whole thing," said Overboe.

And the numbers show, that's definitely being accomplished. Missouri produces more than a half a million cases of wine a year bringing in $52 million in profits from sales. The report also finds Missouri's Wine industry supports close to 15,000 jobs.

"There's been steady growth in that industry over the past ten years," said Don Sherrer, Certified Wine Sommelier at Macadoodles in Springfield.

"Pre-prohibition there were almost 120 wineries in the state of Missouri and it's taken us until about 2010 to get back to that number and now we have exceeded it," Sherrer added.

But the size of the market isn't the only thing that's changing.

"I think the quality over time is improving as well as the wine makers gain experience and as new grapes come onto the market," said Sherrer.

"The other thing I've noticed is that even though the wines are still predominately sweet wines, there's a trend towards the dryer wines so I think the market is maturing as well and people's tastes are maturing," Sherrer explained.
