New Study Reveals Missouri Wine Industry Has Grown Significantly in the Last Decade

Jul 6, 2015

(KOAMTV) - A new study commissioned by the Missouri Wine and Grape Board reveals that the industry has grown by 156% over the last decade.

Small independent producers like White Rose Winery in Carthage are adding to wine numbers. White Rose has been in business since 1999. Owner James O'Haro says Missouri wines tend to stand out from others because they tend to be sweet and inexpensive compared to more commercially popular California wines.

According to the study, Missouri produces 526,000 cases a year adding up to $52 million of wine sold annually. The industry is home to individualized small businesses and is a draw for tourists.

"One of the things that we find from people coming in to visit us that they enjoy about Missouri wines are the variety of wineries and wine makers and their different techniques. You got a lot of small independent wine makers and they kind of do things their own way,” says O’Haro.
