Veuve Leads Champagne Charge in the US

(Wine-Searcher) - The US is back in celebratory mood as Champagne sales show healthy growth.

After suffering a setback in sales in 2012, the US market's thirst for Champagne has returned with a vengeance, with 2014 sales figures growing by almost 5 percent.

hampagne producers shipped 1.3 million cases last year, a jump of 4.5 percent, according to research company Impact Databank, which also noted that the US market had grown by 140,000 cases since 2009. The value of those sales has also increased, rising by 10 percent to $283 a case between 2010 and 2014.

The US growth was led by two LVMH brands. Veuve Clicquot accounted for more than half of the extra 50,000 cases sold to the US. It overtook stablemate Moët & Chandon as the top Champagne in the US in 2013, and grew by 8 percent to more than 400,000 cases. Moët & Chandon turned back two years of decline, rising 4 percent to 370,000 cases in 2014.

Together, the brands currently account for 60 percent of the U.S. Champagne category. Dom Pérignon, LVMH's high-end label, also entered the market's top five brands in its own right, increasing 5 percent to nearly 60,000 cases last year.

Other Champagne houses also saw renewed interest from the US market.
