An Uber for wine delivery? Nakedwines.com, startup partners hope so

Jun 6, 2015

(BizJournals) - Can a new software tool upend the world of wine delivery?

Nakedwines.com, a Napa-based winery that sells its wines online, hopes so. It is partnering on ship-direct-to-home wine orders in San Francisco with Doorman, a S.F. startup.

Doorman's platform lets consumers schedule wines for evening delivery and during tighter one- or two-hour delivery windows than traditional delivery companies offer.

Wine deliveries head to Doorman's warehouse, then direct to customers' homes at agreed-upon times. The service is aimed at millennials and other urban dwellers who like to order online but can't wait around at home during the day, when UPS and other big services tend to make their delivery rounds. An estimated one in five of wine shipments isn't completed the first time.

The Doorman moniker refers indirectly to the fact that many apartment buildings and condos don't have anyone to accept deliveries when occupants are not available.
