Cuvaison sells Calistoga winery, tasting room
Apr 3, 2015
(NBBJ) - Cuvaison Estate Wines on Thursday said it is consolidating its winemaking to its Los Carneros facility with the sale of the brand’s 45-year production and hospitality home in Calistoga to a St. Helena-based developer and manager of luxury lodging and dwellings.
Criswell-Radovan, LLC, purchased the property only from the Schmidheiny family, which acquired Cuvaison in 1979. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.
The new owners plan to rename the property Fairwinds Estate Winery but will continue to provide custom-crush services to existing clients and employ the same production management and team.
“The Calistoga property was a wonderful home for our Cuvaison wines, general offices and tasting room for many years,” said Jay Schuppert, Cuvaison president, said in a statement. “After 10 years of operating two locations, we decided to focus our attention on our Carneros winery and tasting room as well as our Brandlin estate on Mount Veeder.”
Cuvaison built a new winery on the Carneros property in 2004 and recently completed a modern tasting room that has garnered accolades for its vineyard vista.
Bill Criswell and Robert Radovan started Criswell-Radovan in 1996. Its projects have included Calistoga Ranch, the latest renovation plan for Aetna Springs Resort in Pope Valley and Four Seasons in Oakland. The company acquired the Cal Neva hotel and casino in North Lake Tahoe in 2013.
Silicon Valley engineers Thomas Cotrell and Thomas Parkhill started Cuvaison in 1969 and sold it a decade later to the Schmidheinys of Switzerland.
