Bulgaria marks Day of Vine Growers, Wine Producers

Feb 14, 2015

(Focus) - On Saturday, February 14, Bulgarian people mark the Day of Vine Growers, Wine Producers, Falconers, Gardeners and Tavern-Keepers. The day is commonly known as Trifon Zarezan because it is the day on which vines are pruned and "Zarezan" is derived from the Bulgarian verb for "prune". The reference to "Trifon" is due to the fact some Eastern Orthodox Churches commemorate Saint Trifon on February 14 in line with the Julian calendar. The Bulgarian Orthodox Church adopted the Revised Julian calendar some 50 years ago, however, and marks the feast day on February 1. People in Bulgaria celebrate the day now mostly as a day of vine growing and wine production. St Valentine’s Day, a western celebration which has come to be cherished by lovers in country, will also be marked Saturday by Bulgarians.
