US: New York named 'Wine Region of the Year'
Nov 3, 2014
(AP) - Move over, Sonoma. New York has been declared "Wine Region of the Year."
The honor was bestowed by Wine Enthusiast magazine, citing the quality of New York wines, the tremendous growth of the industry, and improved business climate.
The state was selected over Champagne, France; Chianti, Italy; Red Mountain, Washington and Sonoma, California.
The award will be presented at the Wine Star Awards gala dinner on January 26 at the New York Public Library.
Adam Strum, publisher and editor of Wine Enthusiast, called the state "one of the most vibrant and promising wine regions in the world."
Gov. Andrew Cuomo has hosted two Beer, Wine, Spirits and Cider Summits to help the industries grow.
There were 37 wineries in New York State in 1985, compared to more than 375 today
