Push underway to change law prohibiting wine-making in Las Vegas
Jul 18, 2014
(MyNews3) - There's a law prohibiting wine-making in Clark County.
However, a bill will be introduced to change that law.
Las Vegas based Rock-N-Roll Wine combines music festivals with wineries. While the concept may flow well, their wine is made in California from grapes grown in Sonoma. Co-Founder Chris Hammond has a dream someday to make wine in Las Vegas and believes it will be successful.
"From a wine tasting standpoint, from a hospitality standpoint, from being able to go taste a wine that was made on premise and then sell a bottle to them so you could walk out of there," Hammond said.
His dream may be attainable, if a bill is passed in the next Nevada legislature to change the law to allow wineries in counties with more than 100,000 people. This would include Clark and Washoe counties.
Dennis Eckmeyer is President of the Nevada Wine Coalition, and pushing for future wineries.
"How cool would it be to have a convention in town and be able to take them to a winery and do a wine tasting of local wines?" Eckmyer said.
Assembly Minority Leader Pat Hickey will introduce the bill to legalize wine making in the larger counties.
"We think this is important for economic development. States close to us, Eastern Washington and Idaho [for example], are especially enjoying a large growing economy with wine," Hickey said.
"Diversification; let's create some economic positives for the state outside of gaming, outside of construction, outside of drones," Eckmyer said.
While there are wineries operating in smaller regions like Pahrump in Nye County, proponents believe adding more wineries to Nevada will boost sales all around.
Local liquor businesses say there is definitely a market for it, and not just for tourists. They strongly believe locals would support local wineries.
Hickey says grapes grow well in Northern Nevada, and don't require a lot of water.
