Growing Appetite For White Burgundy in U.S.
May 6, 2014
(Wine-Searcher) - Pinot Noirs from DRC, Jayer and friends dominate the headlines but most Burgundy sold in the U.S. is white and comparatively cheap.
U.S. sales of Burgundy wines continue to grow and show no sign of slowing, despite a strong Euro and a "shortage of product" pushing up prices.
In the last year, Burgundy wine exports to the U.S. continued their upward trajectory, increasing 7 percent to 16.4 million bottles, closing in on the record high of 18.3 million set in 2007, before the economic crisis.
While red Burgundy dominates the fine-wine auction headlines, affordable white Burgundy is king in the U.S. market. White wines represent more than two-thirds of all Burgundy wine sales by volume and white wine sales have grown by nearly 10 million bottles over the past decade. But it’s not the fine whites of the Côte de Beaune that make the running – almost 40 percent of bottles shipped to the U.S. were labeled with the regional appellations "Bourgogne" or "Mâcon” in 2013, an increase of 13.7 percent.
It’s not altogether surprising that more than two-thirds of all Burgundy sales in the U.S. are white. Not only does Chardonnay, Burgundy’s signature white variety, account for 62 percent of all wine produced in the region, it is also the most popular grape variety in the U.S.
Red wines account for 28 percent of all Burgundy destined for the States, but this fell slightly last year. While the finest wines of the Côte de Nuits were setting new records at auction throughout 2013, lesser wines made in the area struggled to attract buyers in the U.S.; exports of the Côtes' village- and premier cru-level reds fell 10.6 percent in 2013, the equivalent of 57,410 bottles. It wasn't all bad news: sales of Côte de Nuits reds jumped by more than 100,000 bottles to Japan alone in the same period, taking up the slack
