Number of Texas wineries skyrockets
Apr 10, 2014
(Chron) - Texas wine may not have the best reputation across the country, but that has not stopped dozens of wineries and grape growers from setting up shop across the state in recent years.
A January 2010 press release highlights growth in the wine industry and reports that Texas had fallen to sixth in the country for wine production. At the time, it had 157 wineries. Fast forward to January 2013, and there are more than 270 wineries spanning thousands of acres, according to the Texas Wine and Grape Growers Association.
The growing industry is having a significant impact on the economy - in 2011, it contributed $1.8 billion. The state currently ranks fifth in the country for wine production and has more than 400 grape growers.
Whether you are an ardent fan of Texas wine or would rather stick with a California blend, it looks like Texans aren't giving up anytime soon.
