US: On-trade alcohol volumes slow, wine worst affected
Jul 24, 2013
(Just-Drinks) - Wine volumes in the US on-trade have slowed the most out of all alcohol categories since last month, according to latest figures.
Sales by volume of wine have gone from 0.4% growth in Q2, to a 1.7% drop in the four weeks to 14 July, tracking firm GuestMetrics said yesterday (23 July). The fall was linked to a rise in price/mix for the category and a heatwave in the US affecting on-trade sales.
Beer and spirits have suffered in the four-week period too, according to GuestMetrics. Pub and restaurant beer volumes, which were down 2.3% in Q2, slowed even further, falling 4% in the most recent period. This, despite beer's price/mix remaining “steady”.
Spirits volumes went from a 1.9% drop in the second-quarter to being down 3.5% year-on-year in the most recent four weeks. Price/mix for the category also remained consistent with Q2.
Bill Pecoriello, GuestMetrics' CEO, said: "It's possible the heatwave across the US during this time period negatively impacted (on-trade) traffic trend
