US: Elkton produces first bottling as Oregon's newest wine AVA, Brandborg riesling
Apr 21, 2013
(OregonLive) - Elkton has its first vintage! Oregon's newest American Viticultural Area produced its first wine under the new AVA label early this month.
Elkton received federal recognition as an AVA this year in recognition for its special ability to grow high-quality riesling and other cool climate white grapes. It is the 17th AVA in Oregon.
Grapes used for the first bottling were sourced from grower John Bradley's Bradley Vineyards. The vines were planted in 1983.
The wine was made by Terry Brandborg of Brandborg Winery. Distribution will be 550 cases, to be sold locally and around the United States.
Elkton is in Douglas County, in the lower Umpqua River Valley. Cool coastal breezes make their way up the valley in summer, which distinguishes Elkton from the other growers around Roseburg, where it tends to be hotter in summer.
