(Telegraph) - The Government’s controversial plan to introduce a minimum price for alcohol is based on flawed evidence about the impact it will have on health and crime, according to a report to be published by the drinks industry this week. A study by a leading economics consultancy will cast doubt on whether minimum pricing – which the Coalition has proposed at 45 pence per alcoholic unit – is the most effective way to reduce the impact of binge drinking. Producers are angry about the government plans which they say could be illegal under European Union law, will raise prices for responsible drinkers and do nothing to reduce alcoholism.
