AUS: Cheap supermarket imports blamed for decline in cask wine
Feb 5, 2013
(ABC) - Cheaper imports of bottled wine from countries like New Zealand are being blamed for a decline in Australian cask wine sales.
Managing director of Kingston Estate Wines, Bill Moularadellis, says the major cause is bulk purchasing of wine by big Australian retailers like Woolworths and Coles.
And he says consumers are now making decisions based on price.
"Certainly there is a significant reduction in the proportion of wine that is sold in the bag and box format and that's largely due to shifts in consumer taste and also the availability of lower priced bottle wine, particularly with the major retailers," he said.
