Direct Shipping Laws Outlined by State
Jun 27, 2012
(Wines&Vines) - Speaking at ShipCompliant’s seventh annual Direct Sales Seminar, Wine Institute director of state relations Steve Gross provided an update about recent state actions that affect shipping wine to consumers. The subject's importance to wineries is underscored by the Alcohol, Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau's insistance that compliance with state laws and regulations is a condition of maintaining a Federal Basic Permit. The information applies to wineries with full licenses, in California Type 02. It generally doesn’t apply to retailers or “virtual wineries” that hold only Type 17 and 20 licenses. They don’t hold Federal Basic Permits as wineries. Other states have similar “custom crush” or “negoçiant” licensees that are also considered retailers.
