Canada: Niagara winery executive pleads guilty to tax evasion

Feb 25, 2012

(Nationalpost) - The chief executive of a Niagara-on-the-Lake winery renowned for its ice wine has pleaded guilty to evading more than $100,000 in income taxes. Charles Pillitteri, who heads up the family-owned Pillitteri Estates Winery, entered the plea in a St. Catharines courthouse this week, marking the culmination of a Canada Revenue Agency investigation dating back to 2004. “This is very unfortunate, especially in a family business. We’re on the road to recovery though,” said Connie Slingerland, the company’s chief financial officer and Mr. Pillitteri’s sister.
