On Wine: Ancient Roman Wine
Dec 16, 2011
(Theepochtimes) - Did Romans drink wine like ours? When I was 11 years old, my father bought a beach house in Scauri, a vacation town almost midway between Rome and Naples that is the heart of the Falerno wine region. Wines produced in this area during the Roman Republic era achieved the status as some of the best and most expensive.
A few decades ago, much work was done by local winemakers to recover and replant most of the grape varietals that made the ancient wines of the Falerno area. However, drinking modern wines made of the same grapes as the ones produced by the ancient Romans hardly qualifies as a blast from the past.
