The ‘right’ wine glass?
Dec 16, 2011
(NapaValleyRegister) - With everything said and written about wine, not much space is devoted to the glass that can greatly enhance our vinous enjoyment. Sure, we hear a lot about shape and size, but most of the information comes from manufacturers via advertising and press releases. This can often be a bit intimidating, especially with the high price tags attached to many of the top-flight glasses in the market.
In 1973, Claus Riedel observed the size and shape of the bowl did affect the bouquet, taste, balance and finish of a wine. He introduced his Sommelier Series (today retailing at about $80 to $100 each) and set the pattern of specific glasses intended for specific wines. There are now dozens of glasses (all geared to specific varietals) in the Riedel collection alone, along with those of other notable manufactures including many at far more reasonable prices.
