Vineyard & Cellar Update: Different kinds of wine tanks
Nov 24, 2011
(Wineland) - Containers and consequently wine tanks are basic cellar equipment, without which no cellar, whether boutique or bulk co-operative cellar, can operate. Since this is literally the home of wine, it also plays a decisive role in the vinification process and the subsequent storage of wine. The choice of specific wine tanks is influenced by various factors.
Wine tanks may be either general or multipurpose tanks or specialised or optimised tanks. Whereas multipurpose tanks with different fittings may be used for practically any purpose in wine cellars, some tanks are specially designed to optimise specific vinification processes, for example rotary fermentors. Although the latter are sometimes used for storage, this is not their primary purpose. Due to the special design of such tanks the cost per litre capacity is usually higher. Consequently cellars may decide to install multipurpose tanks only. Although these have the same basic design, options such as tank shape and different fittings may make them more suitable for the needs of individual cellars. Fittings include items such as ports, doors, valves and mounting brackets.
