Beaujolais Nouveau: Oui ou Non?
Nov 18, 2011
(WSJ) - France has a love-hate relationship with Beaujolais Nouveau.
Though the release of this gamay-only wine on the third Thursday of November is a much-awaited and high-profile event in France, many of the French turn up their noses at it: too young, too artificial or just too bad.
Some people even refuse to drink it.
“No, we don’t drink Beaujolais Nouveau, because it’s bad wine,” two men outside a brasserie near Place de la Madeleine, in Paris, said. Outside another brasserie, a group of customers burst out laughing when asked how this year’s vintage tasted, one of them saying it was “dreadful as always” while another reckoned that it was “getting better over the years.”
