(Wines&Vines) - While California growers have struggled with tough conditions this year, and many still haven’t harvested red winegrapes, crush was complete last week for Gruët Winery in Albuquerque, N.M. “It was a really great year,” Lori Anne McBride, the winery’s “wine ambassador,” told Wines & Vines. “We had early frost that concerned us, but it didn’t have a big impact.” She added that yield was normal. Wine from New Mexico might be a surprise to most people—except, perhaps, Gruët’s sparkling wine, which is popular throughout the United States. Gruët is not alone. The state has about 42 wineries according to WinesVinesDATA, and 1,200 acres of winegrape vineyards—still small compared to California’s half-million acres or even Washington’s 30,000 acres. The state has potential for far more, however.
