US: Liquor distributors feeling bottled up by I-1183
Oct 9, 2011
(SeattleTimes) - Liquor and wine distributors have contributed millions to fight an initiative that would privatize the liquor business.Television ads opposing a voter initiative that would privatize the state's liquor business say it would threaten public safety and raise taxes.
But the people who have donated the most to the campaign against Initiative 1183 also have powerful businesses reasons to fight it.
A trade group called the Wine & Spirits Wholesalers of America has contributed $5.8 million of the $7.4 million that's been raised to oppose I-1183, which is backed by Costco Wholesale. The Washington Beer and Wine Wholesalers Association has given another $500,000.
