Canada: B.C. MP hopes to let wine pour across provincial borders
Oct 2, 2011
(TheProvince) - British Columbians should be able to bring home wine from a visit to Ontario’s Niagara grape-growing region and vice versa, says a B.C. MP.
Dan Albas, Conservative MP for Okanagan-Coquihalla, plans to introduce a private member’s bill on Monday in the House of Commons that would make the practice legal.
It’s illegal to ship wine to other provinces unless the wine is exported by their liquor boards under the Importation of Intoxicating Liquors Act, passed in 1928 to clamp down on bootlegging.
Albas wants to change that.
“The 1928 Prohibition-era law still exists,” he said. “The idea is for people to be able to enjoy wines from the different provinces they visit. What we’re asking for is a general exemption for personal use.”
