Train to Avoid Vineyard Heat Illness
Jul 11, 2011
Davis, Calif.—Despite a summer still limping to achieve its normal stride, California’s wine grape-growing season is expected eventually to warm up. Customary elevated temperatures endanger vineyard workers: A pregnant vineyard laborer died from heat-related causes in 2008. To mitigate this inherent hazard, California’s Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) provides materials and training for employers throughout the state, especially in the torrid Central Valley. Last summer, the department collaborated with the Western Center for Agricultural Health and Safety (WCAHS) in Davis to inaugurate a “train the trainer” program, which will be repeated this year starting with a half-day session July 29 in Modesto.
