US: Government lends hand to wine industry
Apr 12, 2011
It has taken awhile, but the wheels of government are starting to catch up with the vehicle that is Washington state's wine industry.
Last week, the state Senate sent to Gov. Chris Gregoire a bill that allows Yakima to restore its Corkage Free Zone program. A corkage fee, oenophiles and restaurateurs will tell you, is what a restaurant charges to a customer who brings a bottle of wine onto the premises. House Bill 1227, sponsored by Rep. Charles Ross, R-Naches, will allow agreements between restaurants and local wineries that permit wine to be opened in a restaurant without the fee.
