US: UP AND DOWN THE WINE ROADS

PREMIERE NAPA VALLEY NEWZ: It was another record-setting year at 2011 Premiere Napa Valley. Nearly $2.4 million was shoveled into the Napa Vintners’ hoppers to support its yearlong activities and to ensure that the world knows Napa Valley remains at the forefront of producing great wines. The high bid of $125,000 for five cases of Scarecrow 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon (estimated release date is March 2012) was bought by a Japanese importer. Do the math and it comes out to $25,000 a case or $2,083 a bottle. Did anyone notice that of the 200 lots auctioned off, 39 were made by female winemakers, including, of course, Scarecrow’s winemaker, Celia Welch?
