Santa Rosa, Calif.—Being proactive about water rights is not a luxury, it’s a necessity, according to Pete Opatz, longtime winegrower and vice president of viticulture at Silverado Premium Properties. His sentiment rings especially true now, as grapegrowers in the Russian River watershed prepare to comply with a water-use ordinance the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors unanimously passed in December.
