AUS: Falling grape crush falls short of fixing wine glut
Dec 6, 2010
The Australian wine industry has made more progress in wiping out the grape glut.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics says the 2009-10 national grape crush fell 7.5 per cent to 1.6 million tonnes.
White wine production dropped by 7.5 per pent, while red and rose production only fell modestly.
The ABS also reports the area of productive vines fell to 152,000 hectares.
The Winemakers Federation of Australia calculates the figure represents a 4.2 per cent reduction in vine plantings, well short of the 20 per cent cut needed to fix the wine oversupply.
