Napa’s wine industry strives for ‘green’ label
Nov 30, 2010
It was only a decade ago that some of Napa’s most prominent agricultural players came together to discuss increased sustainability in the wine industry. The result — the “Napa Green” certification programs — has grown larger than any could have imagined. A collective effort of the Napa Valley Vintners, Napa Valley Grapegrowers, Napa County Farm Bureau and the Napa County Resource Conservation District, the certification programs hope to promote long-term sustainability in the county’s no. 1 industry and help the troubled Napa River watershed.
The voluntary Napa Green program asks landowners to develop a customized farm plan that conserves soil and water, repairs erosion sites, reduces chemical use and restores native habitats.
To date, roughly 45,000 acres are enrolled in the certification process, while more than 19,000 acres have already earned the Napa Green label.
