Adverse weather causes global wine production to decline by 11% in 2019

Dec 10, 2019

(Vinex) - Global wine production will slump this year due to poor weather conditions, particularly in the three key wine producing countries of Spain, Italy and France which between them account for more than 80% of the EU’s output.

According to the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), worldwide production will fall by 11% in 2019, with Portugal the only country in the EU to see an increase in production.

The OIV estimates the total 2019 vintage to be between 258.3 and 267.4 million hl, which gives an average value of 262.8 mhl, down from the 294 mhl recorded in 2018. In Portugal, however, production should increase by 10% to 6.7 mhl, 4% above its five-year average.
