US Government Shutdown Hits Wine Hard

Jan 18, 2019

(Wine Searcher) - With the US government shutdown still running, we look at how the wine industry is faring.

The longest partial government shutdown in US history is a buzz-kill. And not just for the hundreds of thousands of federal workers who are missing their paychecks, but for the wine industry, which depends on a network of government entities to approve labels, imports and perform lab analysis.

According to an analysis from S&P Global Ratings, if the shutdown continues for another week, the cost will be roughly equivalent to what President Donald Trump wanted to spend on his "big, beautiful wall" – around $5.7 billion. As of last Friday, the US economy lost $3.6bn.
