The World's Most Expensive Barbarescos

Sep 21, 2018

(Wine-Searcher) - In our search for the world's priciest wines, we find bargains among Piedmont's other great red.

Although cut from much the same cloth as its more famous Piedmontese neighbour Barolo, Barbaresco can offer all the complexities and nuance of the Nebbiolo grape at a significantly better price.

Originally known as Nebbiolo di Barbaresco, it was recognized as a DOCG in 1980. Although very similar in style to its more prestigious compatriot, there are a few key differences between Barbaresco and Barolo. Namely, due to a marginally warmer maritime climate, Barbaresco tends to be less tannic and, as a result, slightly less long-lived than Barolo but still more than capable of producing glorious expressions of Nebbiolo.
