Natural Wine Faces Legal Definition

(Wine Searcher) -  French politician is spearheading a new attempt to define the indefinable.

A right-wing French politician has filed a motion this month to launch an investigative committee that will seek to legally define the term "natural wine" in France.

Marie-France Lorho, of the Ligue du Sud party, based in the south of France, tabled the proposal on July 16 in the National Assembly. Her motion seeks to define natural wine, encompassing the use of sulfites in winemaking, as well as to protect its status within the country.

"It is with a will to protect and encourage those who work with respect for the environment and work for the richness of our land, that we propose the creation of a commission of inquiry for the precise definition of what a natural wine is," Lohro states in the motion.

"Defining natural wine means recognizing its individuality," the motion continues, "...it is to allow oneself to be surprised by atypical flavors as well as by the know-how of our winemakers. Finally, to define natural wine is to make it less vague for the consumer, it is to act before large-scale production gets hold of its conventions for commercial purposes."
