Pinot Seduces Duckhorn Again

Jul 17, 2018

(Wine Searcher) - The Merlot specialist makes a further foray into Pinot Noir territory with the purchase of Kosta Browne.

Voluptuous Kosta Browne Pinot Noirs must have sex appeal to investors, because the brand was just sold for the third time in the last decade. Moreover, the wines will soon be more available than ever.

Kosta Browne, which made its name as some of the ripest Pinot Noir in the world, was purchased by Duckhorn Wine Company for an undisclosed amount. The sale includes 80 acres of vineyards in Sonoma and Mendocino

The deal brings Kosta Browne back into management by a wine company after it was majority owned by two different private equity groups. That said, Duckhorn is itself owned by a private equity company, TSG Consumer Partners, and it was also sold from one private equity group to another in 2016.

Silicon Valley Bank Wine Division executive vice president Rob McMillan thinks Kosta Browne is a natural fit for Duckhorn.
