The 'junket' that saved Napa Valley's wine industry

Jun 24, 2018

(NVR) - For years, members of Napa’s wine industry and local government officials have gone abroad to see and hear what the rest of the wine world is up to, bringing back what they learn and, as they tell it, occasionally saving the valley from catastrophe.

Since the early 2000’s, Napa leadership has trekked to get-togethers of the Great Wine Capitals, a worldwide group of wine regions that meets twice a year.

Some define the meetings’ premise as “coopetition,” with delegates conferring on topics like research, marketing their regions in relation to the others and how to cultivate business to business relationships between themselves. Besides Napa Valley, the group’s 10-region membership includes other destinations like Bordeaux, Porto, Adelaide, Mendoza, Valparaiso and Verona.
