Having Your Wine and Drinking It

(Wine Searcher) - The Syphon claims to be the future of wine preservation. Christy Canterbury MW tried it out.
Move over, Coravin, there's a new kid on the block
Leave it to an engineer and robotics designer to devise a better way to pour your next glass of still wine. Daniel Fukuba's device is called Syphon. Though Fukuba used his machine building background to design this handy gadget's functionality, he insists it's incredibly streamlined and simple to use. When Fukuba and I met to learn to talk about his Syphon, he almost seemed sheepish that it works so simply. (Mind you, this comes from a man whose website pictures a tee-shirt that reads "…robotics: making humans obsolete since 1996".)
Like so many people, he caught the wine bug simply by trying different wines selected at a forward-thinking wine shop, Oakland Yard Wine Shop & Junction, next to his old apartment in Oakland, California. He moved this year, but luckily he landed in Brooklyn, where plenty of like-minded wine stores could fuel his vinous passion and test his Syphon prototype.
