Pricey Wine Picks for On-Premise

Apr 4, 2018

(Wines&Vines) - Barrel auctions have proven an effective way to raise funds for charity and elevate the profile of wine regions.

Premiere Napa Valley raised a record $4.1 million in February to support the work of Napa Valley Vintners, while last summer saw the annual Oregon Wine Experience auction in Jacksonville breakthrough the million-dollar mark in support of the Asante Foundation. While still relatively new in the Pacific Northwest, wine regions in Oregon and Washington have used barrel auctions to raise awarness of their wines in the trade.

With auction lots attracting bids in the thousands of dollars, buyers are often from retailers or private collectors with a special affinity for the region. It’s less common for the wines to end up on restaurant lists.
