2017 UTOPIAS BEER: THE BEER ILLEGAL IN 15 STATES

Jan 4, 2018

(Instash) - No, it doesn’t have any illegal drugs in it, but the Utopias Beer is so strong you may need to travel to another state to try it.

Utopias Beer is the biennial beer from Sam Adams, but unlike its other ales, this one’s not meant to be consumed in one sitting. Aside from the fact that there are only 13,000 bottles produced every 2 years, Utopias has a whopping 56 proof or 28% ABV.

This is the 10th release of Samuel Adams Utopias.

Is it beer?

Yes, it is technically although it doesn’t look, smell, or taste like one.

You see, Utopias has all the ingredients of a beer. However, it’s fermented (for 24 years) in barrels that are designed to hold different alcohols such as bourbon, port, aquavit, and wine. The Scandinavian Aquavit and Moscat wine barrels are the first time for this beer.

Also, it used bespoke yeast strains and a “ninja yeast” that can withstand the high-alcohol environment. As a result, it gives sherry notes to the nose and the palate.
