Caution advised when picking Napa wine grapes in fire areas
Oct 15, 2017
(NVR) - Napa Valley Grapegrowers said their members would be following recommended safety practices as they consider how or if to harvest grapes in fire-affected areas.
The Napa County Agricultural Commissioner, Napa County Public Health and OSHA have all supplied guidelines for how the harvest can continue once an area is safe for workers to re-enter.
Approximately 90 percent of the Napa Valley harvest had been completed before the fires struck last Sunday, Grapegrowers said.
“The hanging fruit being picked is mostly thicker skinned varieties that are best suited to endure harsher conditions. Currently, many growers are focused on gaining access to their vineyards located in evacuated or restricted areas hoping to survey site conditions,” Grapegrowers said in a news release.
Employers should contact the CAL OSHA consultation office at 510-622-2891 before starting work in conditions that may be hazardous
