Wine Country fires Day 6: Six things to know on Friday
Oct 13, 2017
(MercuryNews) - Here are six things to know Friday morning as firefighters enter their sixth day battling several wildfires in Northern California.
1.) Friday morning, Napa police delivered some good news to their residents: Overnight, many people were allowed to return to their homes. At 5 p.m. Thursday, the Napa County Sheriff’s Office announced a mandatory evacuation order has been lifted for areas of the Silverado Country Club, Monticello Park and The Avenues.
2.) Thursday night, the death toll of the wildfires burning in Northern California hit 31, becoming the deadliest in the state’s history. There are still about 400 people missing in Sonoma County, and officials fear the number of deaths may continue to grow. Late Thursday, Sonoma County authorities released the names of ten of the dead.
3.) We’ve updated our popular Maps: Wine Country fire perimeters, Sonoma and Napa evacuations
4.) The fires have burned more than 183,000 acres and destroyed at least 2,800 homes. But as of this morning, the Tubbs Fire is 25 percent contained and the Atlas Fire is 27 percent contained. Those are the two largest of the 16 wildfires raging in Northern California.
