Hurricane Harvey Spares Texas Vintners - Great News For Wine Lovers
Sep 18, 2017
(Forbes) - Ever since I started traveling to the Lone Star State semi-regularly to write about its superlative barbecue several years back, I have become increasingly impressed with Texas’ wines. Previously in this column I explained the Texan vintners’ love affair with the BBQ friendly tempranillo grape (read here), and earlier this year when I spoke at South By Southwest in Austin I visited the winery on the forefront of the red hot canned wine trend, Infinite Monkey Theorem, and covered this paradigm shift in wine production here. When I reviewed veteran spirits journalist and radio personality Dan Dunn’s newest book, American Wino, a look at the hidden side of American winemaking (read here), I shared what I had learned about the Lone Star State: that Texas is now the nation’s third biggest wine tourism destination, with dozens of high quality wineries, and Dunn’s descriptions make you want to run out and try wines from Texas. And you should.
In the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, I think anything you can do to support the state, its workers and its economy would be much appreciated, and one of the smallest and easiest gestures would be to forego whatever other bottle of wine you were about to buy and pick up one from Texas. You might feel good about doing it, and more likely than not, you will be surprised by how good it tastes.
