Super Bowl: Will 4,000 bottles of wine go begging in beer country?

Feb 3, 2017

(MercuryNews) - What would you do if you were stuck in Anheuser-Busch beer country with 4,000 bottles of — better cover the Clydesdales’ ears — chardonnay, cabernet and other wine varietals?

And you couldn’t give them away?

That’s the cute conundrum the Yellow Tail wine-making folks face as part of their Super Bowl marketing campaign. The vintner says it will be the first company in nearly 40 years to advertise wine during the historically beer-soaked event. The 30-second spot introduces viewers to its affordably priced wine, spokesman Yellow Tail Guy and his “trusty sidekick,” Roo.

In a gesture of good faith (aka public relations prowess), the Yellow Tail Guy drove a truck up to the brewery’s headquarters in St. Louis and tried to give away the 4,000 bottles to employees. But those Budweiser stalwarts were having none of it.

So Yellow Tail is soliciting the public’s input on what to do with all that wine. Through Feb. 17, send your ideas — silly or serious, all will be considered — to #yellowtailguy via Twitter or Instagram. Oddly, there’s no word on what prize the winner will get besides seeing his/her suggestion come to fruition; however, we think that could be easily remedied.
