Custom vintner Bin to Bottle adds Rutherford winery, plans big Napa expansion
Oct 10, 2016
(NBBJ) - In another North Coast example of custom winery capacity being at a premium, Bin to Bottle has added an upvalley production facility to its mix and is planning to expand capacity at its Napa hub by nearly 20 percent.
This year, the company started making wine in a Rutherford boutique winery, applied for 250,000 more gallons annually under the use permit for its south Napa business park main facility and acquired adjoining property to expand its tank and barrel storage, according to managing partner John Wilkinson.
“We have the business,” he said. “Big production has been moving in the valley down toward the airport.”
Bin to Bottle (707-307-4510,bintobottle.com) had its first crush of 400 tons of grapes at the former Swanson Vineyards winery at 1271 Manley Ln. in Rutherford. Santa Rosa-based Vintage Wine Estate acquired Swanson in September 2015. One of Bin to Bottle’s four founding partners is Pat Roney, who runs Vintage. Swanson wines are still sold at the tasting room, but production was moved elsewhere.
Bin to Bottle has installed and updated several pieces of equipment there. The facility has three winemakers and only a half-dozen clients, compared with 60 clients at the Napa facility, Wilkinson said. The Rutherford winery is permitted to produce 50,000 gallons annually.
“It has not been used to capacity for years,” he said.
