Wal-Mart to Sell Wine in Ontario

Sep 14, 2016

(Wines&Vines) - The bidding is over and the winners have been selected as Ontario moves forward with plans to sell wine in grocery stores starting Oct. 28.

Thirteen lucky retailers will be able to sell wine at 70 locations across the province, including some of the biggest names in Canada’s food business: Wal-Mart, Loblaw Cos. Ltd. and Sobeys Inc. While the exact locations are unknown as licenses have yet to be issued, the ambitious plan marks a sea-change in Ontario’s liquor landscape.

Off-premise wine sales previously have been limited to government-run stores and a handful of winery-run boutiques
