How the Color of Your Wine Matters, According to One Napa Winery

Aug 23, 2016

(Forbes) - If we eat with our eyes first, it’s the same for drinking. We see before we sniff or taste, so color sometimes colors our perception of certain types of beverages. There are so many tints for wine, and a few trends, too — like blue wine?!

While many are experimenting for creativity, others are keeping tradition for refinement. Antica Napa Valley wine estate manager Glenn Salva says “it is not our intention to change our winemaking philosophy and approach so to keep up with consumer trends.” Antica, an investment from Piero Antinori from the historic vineyards in Tuscany and Umbria, aims to educate consumers on differences in winemaking techniques and varietal colors to a “true purist results of each expression:”

There have been instances where misinformed consumers seek deep color as a mark of quality, regardless of varietal or the nuances of bringing out the best of each grape – and some winemakers will influence the perceived color of their wines in an effort to sell them.

At a recent visit to Antica, I’m told the range of colors naturally expressed in the wines reflect the geography of the region, high up in the Atlas Peak District of Napa. Here, Glenn helps us break down five types and the color as well as the quality associated with each, a few sips of knowledge to bring along to your next sit-down.
