A glass of wine at night can help you lose weight, we're serious
Aug 16, 2016
(Firstcoastnews) - It sounds too good to be true, but finally science has confirmed that indulging in a glass of red wine can keep you trim.
According to research published by Washington State University in June of last year, there is a compound found in red wine that can help prevent obesity and metabolic dysfunction.
Resveratrol is a polyphenol that changes white fat to beige fat, according to the WSU study.
This sounds like high school chemistry class, so let’s break it down for you:
In the medical community, up until a few years ago, the thought was that there were only two kinds of fat, white and brown. However, according to Professor of Animal Sciences at WSU, Min Du, polyphenols like Resveratrol helps convert white fat to a third fat: beige fat.
White fat hangs around in the body when we consume too many calories and burn too little which equates to a “spare tire” and other ‘unwanted’ chub when it accumulates in excess. On the other hand, brown fat is the fat the body burns and uses to heat the body.
According to Women’s Health Magazine, you can generate brown far by exercising, getting good sleep, and exposing yourself to the cold regularly.
Beige fat is generated from white fat and can be burned off more easily. But, ideally you want a balance of all three.
“Polyphenols like resveratrol are good as they enhance the oxidation of fat so it won’t be overloaded. The excess is burned off as heat,” Du said.
The truth is that polyphenols are found in much higher concentration in fruits like blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, apples and grapes, than in wine
