US company turns unused beer grain into granola bars
Jul 18, 2016
(TDB) - A company in San Francisco is seeking to use the disused grains from America’s breweries and distilleries into granola bars.
Regrained are looking to not only fill the lunch boxes of hungry people across the country, but to put the large percentage of discarded grains in America to good use.
“Roughly 40 percent of the food that we grow is never consumed,” says Regrained co-founder Dan Kurzrock. “What we’re talking about more broadly is closing a nutrient loop.”
With 4,500 breweries in the US alone, there is a big scope for waste as breweries deplete natural resources and generate byproducts that could have a negative effect on the environment if left untended to.
Furthermore, it is reported that up to 85% of spent grain, which not only has financial value, but nutritional value, too, and now businesses on all sides are looking into the most efficient ways of harvesting this new found cash cow.
