NEW YORK SCRAPS ‘PROHIBITION-ERA- DRINKING LAWS
Jun 19, 2016
(TDB) - New York lawmakers reverse laws over alcohol sales on Sundays.
Alcohol will now be available on Sunday mornings in New York City as decision makers have rolled back a ‘prohibition-era’ law to make the drinks industry more competitive.
Governor Andrew Cuomo approved the new ruling stating that bars, taverns and restaurants will be allowed to sell alcoholic drinks from 10am.
Imposed more than 80 years ago, the Alcoholic Beverage Control Law forbade the sale of alcohol on a Sunday until midday, but Cuomo labelled it as an “archaic blue law” that imposed to enjoyment of certain activities on “the day of rest”.
Senate majority leader John Flanagan said in a statement: “There was broad consensus between the Governor and Legislature that New York’s blue laws were outdated and in need of reform, specifically the provision which barred those enjoying brunch from purchasing an alcoholic beverage before noon on Sunday.”
With nearly 900 breweries, wineries and distilleries in the state, the news will be most welcome, and follows in the trend of US states revising their existing alcohol laws with Ohio recently overturning their rules on a limit cap for beer ABV.
